“Outdoor hockey is what it is all about.” - Paul Coffey

Go back to hockey’s roots and play some pond hockey with KCWHL this winter!   “Pond” hockey season in Kansas City is here and we have plenty of outdoor rinks in the KC area.

We play on outdoor rinks because the temperatures aren’t typically cold enough or long enough to skate on ponds or lakes here.  For that you’ll have to travel north to skate on an actual pond.

Even though we don't play on a pond it's still called pond hockey because it's outside and the rules are a bit different from regular ice hockey.  Players wear lots of layers and limited gear (usually skates, sticks, gloves, and helmets), and there isn’t a goalie.  Pond hockey nets are very small.  Limited gear is ok because players aren’t supposed to lift the puck off the ice very much, no slap shots, and no heavy contact.

Last winter, we held a KC women’s hockey pond hockey tournament.  Look out for the 2nd Annual Pond Hockey Classic in late January/early February at Summit Ice in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
